2022 PABJ MULTIMEDIA SCHOLARSHIP CHALLENGE
REQUIREMENTS
College Students
• Full-time applicants: Must currently have a minimum of 12 credits
• Part-time applicants: Must currently have a minimum of 6 credits
• Community College applicants: Must currently have a minimum of 12 credits
• All college applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA
• Must provide official sealed transcript from registrar
• All applicants must submit a minimum of 3 examples of your work.
• Applicants must have a letter of recommendation from a journalism professor.
• All applicants must submit a 1200 word essay
High School Senior
• Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA (official transcript required)
• Must submit a minimum of 2 examples of your work
• Applicants must have two letters of recommendation. One letter must be the applicants' English teacher.
• All applicants must submit an 800 word essay
WHAT TO SUBMIT
All College Students
A typed & double spaced 1200 word essay addressing the following: (pick one):
• What are the duties and responsibilities of a professional journalist? As an African American, how do you honor ethical boundaries and maintain balance when covering stories that have racial and cultural connections?
• You’ve been given the opportunity to pick one person in history (past or present) to interview/converse with for an hour. Who would you choose and why? What would you talk about ?
• How has social media impacted the effectiveness of true journalism?
• You have become one of the most influential journalists of today and have been invited to speak at The White House. Write your speech.
High School Seniors
A typed & double spaced 800 word essay addressing the following: (pick one):
• What or who has been your biggest inspiration? How has it sparked your own personal growth and new understanding of yourself and others?
• Why do you want to pursue journalism as a career? Where do you see yourself in ten (10) years?
• Are you prepared for college ? How will this scholarship help you? Why do you deserve it?
TIMELINE
1. Deadline for ALL submissions: September 30, 2022
2. Winners announced: October 15, 2022
3. Awards & Scholarship Gala: Saturday, November 12, 2022
* Scholarship winners must be present at the November Awards & Scholarship Gala to receive their scholarship award*

COLLEGE STUDENTS
Undergrad / Full-Time $1,250 The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists is offering two (2) $1,250 scholarships to Philadelphia area college students pursuing a career in journalism / multimedia arts. Those eligible for this journalism challenge must be enrolled full-time in a four-year accredited college in the Philadelphia region (Philly, South Jersey, Delaware). Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in journalism or communications (i.e. television, radio, print, new media) or in another major working toward a journalism career. |
COLLEGE STUDENTS
Community College / Full-Time $1,000 The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists is offering one (1) $1,000 scholarship to a Philadelphia area community college student enrolled full time in a two year accredited community college. Student must be pursuing an associate degree in journalism / multimedia arts. |
COLLEGE STUDENTS
Undergrad / Part-Time $500 The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists is offering one (1) $500 scholarship to a Philadelphia area college student enrolled as a part-time student (minimum 6 credits) in a four-year accredited college. Student must be pursuing a degree in journalism / multimedia arts. |
FUTURE JOURNALIST
High School Senior $500 The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists is offering $500 towards the purchase of equipment or software to a Philadelphia area high school student actively exploring their interest in the field of journalism or multimedia arts. |
